Road Maintenance
The Shire's 2008/09 budget includes $1.1 million for road maintenance works, which includes general road maintenance, grading of gravel roads, slashing of roadside trees in rural areas, edge patching and slashing / spraying of road verges. If you identify a maitenance requirment, please click here to complete a Roadworks Request Form. Please note that road grading is dependent on weather conditions and cannot necessarily be carried out when requested.
Road Construction
The construction and maintenance of roads take a large portion of the Shire's budget, usually equivalent to the amount of rates raised. This year there are a number of programs in place which deal with the long term planning for the maintenance and upgrading of the road network. These include rural road resealing program, rural road reconstruction program and townsite drainage.
The roadworks program is formulated taking into consideration the amount of funding that can be attracted from the Federal and State Governments, to reduce the burden on ratepayers. These programs are developed 1-2 years in advance of the Council setting its annual budget.
Local Government annual budgets take into account anticipated works for the ensuing year and the amount of revenue that is required to meet that commitment. Having established the works programme, the Council is unable to approve additional works during the year unless it deletes works of corresponding value that have been approved in the budget. To meet strict budget preparation deadlines, ratepayers are urged to contact their Councillors before the end of March each year with any requests that they want considered by Council for inclusion in the budget.
The following capital roadworks have been budgeted for 2008/09. While the Shire endeavours to complete all budgeted works, circumstances such as weather, plant breakdown and other unforeseen occurrences do not always allow this to happen. Please see the Budget 2008/09 for full details of all programs.
