Shire Facilities - Mount Barker

Mount Barker Community Recreation Centre

A state of the art recreation centre is located adjacent to the Mount Barker Senior High School, Albany Highway, Mount Barker.

This facility has been provided in conjunction with the Shire of Plantagenet, the Education Department of Western Australia, the Department of Sport and Recreation, Lotteries Commission, Indoor Sporting Club, Recreation Centre Advisory Committee, the local sporting associations and the community.

Indoor Sports - The centre caters for netball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, indoor hockey, squash and many junior programmes.

Gymnasium - A fully equipped gymnasium caters for the fitness conscious with attractive membership packages available. Casual users are also welcome.

Regular aerobic classes are available.

Multi-purpose Rooms – the Centre has two rooms available for meetings, training seminars or leisure course classes.

Main Hall – with a sprung wooden floor the main hall is an ideal venue for a wide range of sporting activities, functions and other activities.

Kiosk – drinks and snacks are available at the Kiosk. (No hot food available)

Mount Barker Swimming Pool

The Mount Barker Swimming Pool is situated on Albany Highway and is open annually from November to April.

Facilities include a 50m pool, baby and toddler's pool, adequate shade, a barbeque and a kiosk. The Pool caters for passive or unstructured physical activity pursuits and is also utilised for structured or organised activities including swimming lessons, swimming club, swimming carnivals and other events and bookings.

Frost Oval Precinct - Mount Barker

The Frost Oval Precinct the hub of equine sport for the Shire of Plantagenet and also home to the local Australian Rules Football Club, the North Mount Barker 'Bulls'. Its recreation infrastructure includes:

  • Open space oval / playing field
  • Oval lighting (minimal training standard)
  • Equestrian Stock Yards (disabled access)
  • Turf Racing Track
  • Stables
  • Wool Pavilion
  • Club Room
  • Change rooms
  • Ablutions
  • Undercover entertainment area
  • Small Playground area
  • Ram Pavilion

The Frost Oval Precinct is utilised by a diverse range of Sporting Clubs including, but not limited to the Great Southern Stockhorse Society, Mount Barker Football Club, Mount Barker United Soccer Club(training), Mount Barker Turf Club, Plantagenet Company of Archers, Woogenellup Polocrosse Club, Riding for the Disabled – Plantagenet Group.

The entertainment area and Clubhouse is also utilised for meetings, seminars, functions and fundraisers on a semi-regular basis.


Sounness Park Precinct - Mount Barker
Sounness Park's main entry point adjoins the main street of Mount Barker, Lowood Road. The local Sounness family vested the land to the Shire, for the purpose of recreation.

This Park is currently the home ground for the local cricket team and was previously the home ground to a second Australian Rules Football side, South Mount Barker Football Club, which has been disbanded. The oval has also previously been used to cater for hockey, soccer and rugby. Its recreation infrastructure includes:

  • Open space oval / playing field – with turf cricket pitch
  • Clubhouse
  • Cricket practice nets

    The oval at Sounness Park has adequate drainage but is not reticulated, has adequate space for future growth if necessary and has great spectator advantage points around the oval.

  • Woogenellup Polocrosse Grounds

    The Woogenellup Polocrosse Grounds are located on McDonald Avenue in Mount Barker, across the road from the Frost Oval precinct.

    The area was originally developed to cater for the local Polocrosse Club with a playing ground, a three-walled shaded area and two small storage facilities. The Polocrosse Club has since relocated to the Frost Oval precinct where facilities include a level playing field, holding yards and toilets.

    The area is currently being used for outdoor archery on a Sunday morning from 8:30am – 11:30am, the occasional olocrosse game and over-flow car parking on a race day for the Turf Club.

    Mount Barker Skate Park

    The Mount Barker Skate Park is located in the Wilson Park precinct, adjacent to the Shire of Plantagenet Administration Centre. The facilities consist of some portable jumps and a rail.

    Shire Facilities - Kendenup

    Kendenup Agricultural Grounds

    The Kendenup Agricultural Grounds (established in 1936) is a precinct that encompasses a variety of sport and community use. Situated on Shire land, the grounds are located on the corner block near Beverley Road and Chauvel Road on the outskirts of the Kendenup townsite. The grounds infrastructure includes:

  • Semi-reticulated oval
  • Yarding facilities for the sheep dog trials
  • Pavilion
  • Community Hall
  • Toilet Block
  • Overnight camping ground

    The facilities are currently utilised by:

  • Kendenup Cricket Club
  • Kendenup Playgroup
  • Kendenup Bridge Club
  • Kendenup Youth Club
  • Kendenup Indoor Bowls
  • Stirling Sheepdog Trial Club
  • Miniature Pony Association
  • Kendenup Primary School events / exhibitions
  • Community meetings and fundraisers
  • Kendenup Tennis Courts

    The Kendenup Tennis Courts are located adjacent to the Kendenup Agricultural Grounds on the corner block near Beverley Road and Chauvel Road - the outskirts of the Kendenup townsite.

    An upgrade to the courts is currently underway. Stage 1 of a 3 stage project included mounding the court area using compounded gravel, resurfacing the 4 courts and installing a new perimeter fence.

    The Kendenup Tennis Club is currently proceeding with stage 2, being the replacement of the shade and kitchenette facility. Stage 3 is the upgrade to the ablution block and inclusion of a fenced off children's play area.

    Kendenup Hall

    The Kendenup Hall is located on the corner of Beverly Road and Hassell Avenue in Kendenup. This building has historical characteristics and remains as a community facility that caters for some sport pursuits, although currently the only organised sport or recreation use for this building is badminton.

    Located within the external parameter of the hall are the public toilet facilities for the town and a small open space precinct that includes a pergola with BBQ facilities a swing set and a slide.

    Shire Facilities - Narrikup

    Narrikup is located 20 km south of Mount Barker towards Albany. Recreation infrastructure in Narrikup includes:

  • Oval / open space
  • Combined sports clubhouse
  • Cricket training net
  • 2 x tennis courts
  • Narrikup hall
  • Children's playground
  • Open space picnic / entertainment area
  • Shire Facilities - Rocky Gully

    Rocky Gully is situated approximately 60 km from Mount Barker, on Muirs Highway, toward Manjimup. Rocky Gully is the further most townsite from the Shire's main town, Mount Barker. Recreation infrastructure in this community includes:

  • Tennis Court
  • RSL Hall
  • Playground
  • Higgins Park oval
