The Shire of Plantagenet launched its Disability Awareness Documentary ‘Celebrating Ability’ on Thursday 17 March 2022. The Mount Barker Community Resource Centre Auditorium turned into a vibrant hub for the afternoon with the community and four special guests in attendance: documentary subjects Kaleb Glas, Eleanor Beidatsch, Kelvin Cook and Karen Woltering.

Shire President Chris Pavlovich welcomed the audience prior to handing over to Karen Woltering, Council Representative and Disability Advocate, for the formal introduction.

The idea of developing a disability awareness campaign was first raised by the Disability Advisory Group back in 2021. The Shire of Plantagenet produced a 10-minute video featuring four inspiring community members and their stories of living with a disability. The documentary aims to raise awareness around disability and showcases the extraordinary achievements individuals with a disability accomplish, how they overcome barriers and contribute to community life and reach their goals.

The documentary was followed by an interactive Q & A session, giving community members the opportunity to ask our special guests valuable questions about living with a disability.

Attendees mingled and networked after the session enjoying a beautiful afternoon tea. Karen Woltering emphasised that: ‘Disability does not mean you can’t do. It means anyone CAN DO even if it is through different means.’

The event was funded by the Department of Communities through their International Day of People with Disability fund.
