A lively group of kids and cops took to the courts at Wilson Park on 1 December 2021 for the inaugural 3-on-3 Cops and Kids Basketball Tournament.

Four teams battled it out over three rounds, followed by the finals.

The victors were the Mount Barker Nets (pictured), captained by Constable Kai Panton and his team of players comprising Saxon Hill, Roddy Penny, Asadullah Ali Zada, Kyrell Williams and Alrik Bisschoff.

Best Team Player for the tournament was Alaze Wynne, Most Valuable Player was Kyrell Williams, Fairest and Best was won by Ashton Bassett and Constable Baden McMillan took out the Top Cop award.  The winners trophy was made by the talented Sergeant David Johnson, with plenty of space for more names to be added at future events.

‘The Cops and Kids game was a great opportunity for the kids, Mount Barker Police and the Shire to get together and have a tonne of fun’ said Sonja Parker, Community Development Officer for the Shire of Plantagenet. ‘The Police provided four talented players and the music including DJ Kristy Kempton, the Shire coordinated the event and served pizzas for the hungry players and the kids bought the skills and the show.  It was a great afternoon with sizzling three pointers, slam dunks and the odd spill.’

The community also got behind the event with the Mount Barker Amateur Basketball Association providing equipment, the Pitt family umpiring the games, former Basketball Development Officer Mark Jordan running a coaching clinic for players and coordinating team draws and rules, catering from the Plantagenet Pizza Bar and the Mount Barker Community College helping coordinate players.
