Youth Rock-ing Their First Event

On a sunny winter afternoon in June, the youth of Mount Barker came together to get creative, relax with mindfulness and hang out with friends – it was the Plantagenet Youth Advisory Group’s first event. The members of this motivated group meet fortnightly in partnership with the Mount Barker Community College to discuss local issues, create solutions and provide input into how our community can be better for youth.

Planned by youth, for youth, and recognising the stressful times of their friends which includes exams and covid impacts, the group picked a mindfulness activity that all ages could join – and join they did! Over sixteen participants from 5 – 16 years spent the afternoon learning how to paint their own mandala rock, a process of relaxation and expression. The result was a beautiful range of bright colours, amazing patterns, and lots of enthusiasm. The participants proudly took their artwork home, and you might event spot a few extras around Wilson Park next time you are out.

With such a success the Shire is sure there are great things coming from the Youth Advisory Group whose next focus will be helping the Shire create a masterplan for the future Wilson Park site. If you want to find out more or volunteer on this amazing group, get in touch with the Shire on 9892 1111 or email info@sop.wa.gov.au
