Local Planning Policy 1 – Ancillary Dwellings allows ancillary dwellings – commonly known as granny flats – in rural residential zones and peri-urban areas around Mount Barker and Kendenup, bringing these areas into line with residential zones within the townsites.
The policy was adopted at an ordinary council meeting on 21 February.
Shire President Chris Pavlovich said the policy superseded Town Planning Scheme No. 14, which was adopted in 2006.
“The old policy was reviewed to bring it into line with the Local Planning Scheme, current ‘model definitions’, and community expectations,” Cr Pavlovich said.
“A more flexible approach and support for a variety of housing types in semi-rural areas will hopefully go some way towards addressing current housing shortages across the state and nation.”
“While not traditionally a local government responsibility, the Shire is taking a proactive approach where feasible on the issue of housing availability and affordability.”
The policy can be viewed on the Shire website and in person at the Administration Centre.
An information sheet is also available on the Shire website.
