Plantagenet sporting clubs are planning for the future with support from the Shire of Plantagenet and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGC) through their Every Club Grants Program.

A total of six sporting clubs have taken part in the Shire of Plantagenet’s strategic planning series since the beginning of the year including the Kendenup Tennis Club, the local Rifle and Pistol Clubs, the Mount Barker Bulls Football Club (funded by GSFL), the Mount Barker Golf and Bowling Club and the Mount Barker Bowls and Sporting Club.

The need for sporting clubs and community groups to develop and follow a ‘strategic roadmap’ is becoming more and more essential in today’s not-for-profit sector. ‘Strategic planning takes the clubs from where they are to where they want to be’ says Greg McLennan, one of the workshop facilitators.

The program is delivered by Great Southern based Kim Buttfield (Consulting), who is offering over 25 years of community and sport sector experience in not-for-profit governance, club planning, volunteer support, funding and community management.

Matt Gilbert, president of the Mount Barker Bulls Football Club said: ‘I feel it has given the club some very good direction and action points to now follow… [and] having an agreed upon set of values and statements has helped shape the club to be more modern and also helped with seeking sponsorships, grants [and] coach adverts.’ In addition, the Club has since formed a women’s football subcommittee to help reduce the workload of volunteers.

DLGC is offering another round of funding through their Every Club grant to enable organisations to support sport and recreation clubs to build their organisational capacity and capability with a focus on governance, planning and management practices.
