New policy opens up camping and temporary accommodation on private land

A new policy which increases opportunities for camping and temporary accommodation on private land was adopted by the Council on 26 August following public consultation.

The policy follows changes to State Government legislation in late 2024 which granted local government the ability to approve permits for camping and temporary accommodation on privately-owned land.

The newly adopted policy provides for permits for:

  • Short-term camping of up to 28 days,
  • Temporary accommodation while building a house, and
  • Temporary living using a Tiny Home on Wheels.

The policy includes minimum conditions that aim to protect the amenity of neighbours, ensure correct and safe waste disposal, and minimise the risk to life posed by bushfires.

The new policy provides a practical approach to camping and temporary accommodation, which balances increased freedoms for landowners while addressing the potential issues unfettered camping could create.
