The Shire of Plantagenet has secured a $38,709 grant for a rainwater harvesting system at the Rocky Gully Bush Fire Brigade under the Community Water Supplies Partnership Program.

The program, jointly funded by the Western Australian and Australian Governments, helps rural communities build climate resilience by improving local water infrastructure.

Shire President Len Handasyde said the grant would be used to purchase and install a 200,000-litre rainwater tank connected to the old town Water Supply Dam and piped to the tank located at the Rocky Gully Bush Fire Brigade shed.

“Ensuring an adequate water supply year-round is essential in rural areas susceptible to water shortages, particularly during the bushfire season,” Cr Handasyde said.

“This grant will enable the Shire to provide the brigade with a reliable water supply for future use during bushfires to help safeguard our community."

“The Shire will provide a co-contribution of $16,716, which will be allocated in the 2025-26 Annual Budget.”

The Shire plans to install the rainwater tank prior to this bushfire season.
