The Shire of Plantagenet 2025-2026 budget caters to a growing community.

Shire President Len Handasyde said the budget, adopted by the Council on 5 August, comprised $20.9 million of capital expenditure.

“This is a substantial increase from last year’s $12.7 million investment,” Cr Handasyde said.

“Our major project is the next stage of the Mount Barker Memorial Swimming Pool redevelopment, which was originally built in 1971 and is nearing the end of its life.”

“The next stage will comprise the construction of a learn-to-swim pool, splash pool, 50-metre pool, new plant, filtration, water-treatment infrastructure and heating, and some minor landscaping.”

“These works follow the new pool entry, office, kiosk, change rooms, toilets, club room, veranda and terraced area completed in 2022.”

“Our pool is the only 50 metre outdoor pool in the lower Great Southern region and is valued by users of all ages.”

The Council allocated $1.6 million towards the first stage of the Wilson Park Recreational Masterplan, comprising a skate park, pump and jump track, hardcourts for basketball, netball and a separate half court, a bouldering wall, table tennis and parkour area, all lit up by floodlights.

“Facilities and activities for young people are a priority for the community, and the Council looks forward to this project starting in January 2026,” Cr Handasyde said.

“We have increased our road construction program from $2.95 million last year to $5.5 million and allocated close to $2.5 million for new Bush Fire Brigade sheds in Rocky Gully and Woogenellup, upgrades to Porongurup and Narrikup Halls, and a new State Emergency Service building.”

“In addition, the Council will continue to provide financial support to community groups, sporting clubs and not-for-profit organisations through the revised and streamlined Community Grants Program.”

“From this year, tip passes will be issued to all rateable properties within the Shire to provide equity for refuse disposal for all residents.”
