Kendenup goes Wild!

WA's most spectacular gravel event, Wild Gravel 2025, drew more than 500 entrants to the Shire of Gnowangerup to participate in gravel road running and cycling challenges through the majestic Stirling Range National Park.

This year’s program included a 151km cycle race with the halfway point travelling through Kendenup.
Fifty-one riders tackled the gruelling race, which was rated a 5-star difficulty score (the hardest race on the program) and included 2,271m of hill climbs.

Setting off at 7am, the pack of five race leaders arrived in Kendenup at 8.50am cheered on by spectators. Riders continued to race through the town until 10.30am, with the last rider quickly ducking into the local shop to grab an energy drink to keep the motivation going. Simon Billeau won the men’s category and Lauren Humphreys won the women’s category with race times of 4:35:38 and 5:50:48 respectively.

Kendenup turned on the charm for the morning with the bustling Kendenup Markets, the Bakers Folly Bloom Festival event, Kendenup Mortigallup Bush Fire Brigade Open Day, the Two Black Sheep General Store supporting the crowd’s coffee needs, and a charming exhibition by local artist Stephanie Dimmock, among many other activities. Several Wild Gravel competitors said how special it was to race up the main street to the sounds of cheering crowds - and even a bagpipe player!

Thank you to all the people who volunteered as road marshalls throughout the Kendenup district to support this event. Special thanks to the Veterans Assist Great Southern for providing a team of helpers and the Mount Barker Amateur Swim Club who hosted the Kendenup pit-stop, providing water, electrolytes and lots of encouragement for the racers.
