The Shire and Mount Barker Returned & Services League Sub-Branch have partnered on the Mount Barker War Memorial Enhancement Project to upgrade and enhance the remembrance features in Centenary Park and the We Remember Them Walk.

The Council allocated $20,614 in the 2025/26 Annual Budget to support the $40,614 project. In addition, it has secured a $10,000 grant from the Australian Government Department of Veteran’s Affairs Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program, which supports projects commemorating the sacrifice of Australia’s service personal and their families.

The Mount Barker RS&L Sub-Branch has secured a $10,000 grant from the Australian Government Stronger Communities Programme, which supports infrastructure projects that provide social benefits for local communities.

Shire President Len Handasyde said a new memorial recognising all conflicts since Federation would be installed on the southern end of the We Remember Them Walk in Centenary Park, as part of the project.

“Additional upgrades comprise the installation of a new plinth with plaques recognising the home-based services that supported returned soldiers and their families during and after conflicts along the We Remember Them Walk, upgrading the plaques along the avenue of trees in the Centenary Park, and lighting the Mount Barker War Memorial flagpole and cenotaph,” Cr Handasyde said.

“This project will enhance Centenary Park for the Plantagenet community, many of whom are past and active servicemen and women.”

“Attendance at the ANZAC Day service and march has grown in recent years, which reflects the strong local support for those who have bravely served their country.”

“The Shire is pleased to partner with the Mount Barker RS&L Sub-Branch on this significant project.”

Works will commence in November, with the project anticipated to be complete in time for the 2026 ANZAC Day service.
