Restricted and prohibited burning periods

The Shire of Plantagenet has introduced new restricted and prohibited burning periods.
At the May Council meeting, the Council endorsed proposed changes to the restricted and prohibited
burning periods following consultation with Shire Bush Fire Control Officers and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
The following dates have been declared by DFES:
·Eastern Zone Restricted Period: 15 September to 31 March (permits required).
·Eastern Zone Prohibited Period: 15 November to 28 February and Good Friday.
·Western Zone Restricted Period: 15 October to 31 March (permits required).
·Western Zone Prohibited Period: 1 December to 28 February and Good Friday.
Shire President and Bushfire Advisory Committee Chairperson Len Handasyde said the changes were proposed by the Bushfire Advisory Committee at the May meeting.
“They were brought about in response to the often warmer and drier weather conditions in recent years late in the growing season,” Cr Handasyde said.
“This has resulted in the fire risks escalating earlier than many years in the past, an increase in escaped burns and the deployment of firefighting resources.”
“While you can still burn inside the restricted period, you must have a permit to do so.”
This information is included in the 2025/2026 Bush Fire Mitigation Notice distributed to owners and occupiers of land within the Shire with rates notices in August.
It is also available on the Shire's Fire and Emergency Management webpage.
