Saleyards mark a milestone

The Mount Barker Regional Saleyards has been operating for 25 years, with the milestone being passed recently.

Opened in 2000, the Mount Barker Regional Saleyards is an important saleyard for the Great Southern region, located seven kilometres south of Mount Barker on Albany Highway.

Throughout the year, prime sales are held weekly with additional sales during the weaner season.

At the April Council meeting, the Council endorsed an anniversary event and an updated logo to mark the milestone after the Saleyards Advisory Committee endorsed the logo at its March meeting. The new Council-endorsed logo will be introduced when replacements and upgrades to signage are required.

Shire President Len Handasyde said the anniversary event would be held later this year during springtime as this was seen to be a more suitable time than the actual date of the anniversary.

“The Shire saleyards is one of the most modern cattle livestock marketing facilities in Western Australia,” Cr Handasyde said.

“It is an important saleyards complex servicing the Great Southern and wider regions livestock producers and processors.”

Cattle have come from far afield from many places over the years. Esperance, Manjimup and further west, Denmark, Walpole, Williams and many places in between have all featured as places of origin of the animals yarded at Mount Barker.

“The anniversary event will be marked with a market day event and other activities prior to and during the weekly sale.”

“We hope the community will turn out to celebrate the 25-years of the running of our yards complex and the agriculture industry.”
