Recovery After an Emergency

Recovery starts while an emergency is still being managed and can continue for months or years.

The Shire coordinates local recovery with government agencies, community organisations, businesses and affected residents.

Return Only When it is Safe

  • Wait for official advice before returning to an evacuated area.
  • Obey road closures and instructions from emergency services, police and utility providers.
  • Assume fallen powerlines are live and report them to Western Power on 13 13 51.
  • Be alert for unstable trees, damaged buildings, hot ash, contaminated water, asbestos and hazardous materials.
  • Keep children and animals away from damaged areas.

Document Damage

Contact your insurer as soon as possible and follow its instructions before removing or disposing of damaged items.

Take photographs and keep records of damage, expenses, conversations and reference numbers.

Do not enter an unsafe building to collect evidence.

Get Help

The help available depends on the event and any government declarations.

Official information may cover emergency accommodation, personal support, financial assistance, clean-up, waste, animal welfare, business support and rebuilding.

Use links and telephone numbers published for the incident and be cautious of scams.

Look After Yourself and Others

Strong reactions after an emergency are common. Keep routines where possible, accept practical help and speak with a health professional if distress is persistent or overwhelming.

Check on neighbours and community members, while respecting privacy and safety directions.

Local Recovery Information

When local recovery arrangements are activated, the Shire will publish verified information about community meetings, facilities, waste, rebuilding and available support through its social media channels and other avenues.

Contact the Shire on (08) 9892 1111 or [email protected] for routine local recovery enquiries.
