Storm, Flood Heatwave and Other Emergencies

Bushfire is not the only local hazard. Make one household emergency plan that can be adapted for severe weather, flooding, heat, outages, hazardous materials and other disruptions.

Storm

  • Maintain roofs, gutters and trees and secure loose outdoor items before severe weather.
  • Move vehicles and animals to safer locations early and keep away from windows and damaged structures.
  • Call the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance with storm damage. Call 000 if life is at risk.

Flood

  • Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Roads and bridges may be damaged below the surface.
  • Move people, vehicles, equipment and animals early if flooding is forecast.
  • Plan for isolation and loss of road access, power and water services.
  • Follow road closures and use Main Roads and local information before travelling.

Heatwave

  • Check forecasts and warnings, drink water regularly and avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day.
  • Never leave a child, older person or animal in a parked vehicle.
  • Check on people who are older, live alone, have a medical condition or may not have effective cooling.
  • Follow health advice for heat-related illness and call 000 for a life-threatening emergency.

Power and Utility Disruption

Keep torches, charged power banks, safe drinking water and a plan for medicines and equipment that need refrigeration or electricity.

Generators and fuel-burning appliances produce deadly carbon monoxide and must never be used indoors or in enclosed spaces.

Hazardous Materials

Move away from fumes, smoke or spills, warn others and call 000.

Do not touch, clean up or enter a contaminated area unless directed by the responsible agency.
