Litter and Illegal Dumping
Litter and illegal dumping harm the environment, create fire and safety risks and cost the community to clean up. Reports may involve rubbish dropped in a public place, waste thrown from a vehicle or larger loads left on roadsides, verges, reserves or bushland.
If there is an Immediate Hazard
- Call 000 for an active fire, a serious traffic hazard or an immediate threat to life.
- Do not touch or disturb needles, suspected asbestos, chemicals or other unknown hazardous material. Keep people and animals away and report the location.
- For a routine report on Shire land or a local road, contact Ranger Services on (08) 9892 1137 or the Shire on (08) 9892 1111.
- Report pollution or significant illegal dumping to Environment Watch using the online reporting service.
What to Report
- rubbish dropped or thrown by a pedestrian or from a vehicle
- household, building, commercial or green waste dumped on public land
- uncovered or unsecured loads that release material onto a road
- dumped material that may contain hazardous waste
- an abandoned vehicle, using the parking and abandoned vehicles pathway.
Information That May Help
Do not confront a person or place yourself at risk to collect evidence. If it is safe and lawful, record:
- the exact location, date and time
- the type, approximate amount and condition of the material
- a vehicle registration, make, model, colour and direction of travel
- a description of the person or business involved
- photographs or video and the names of any witnesses.
Witnessed Littering from a Vehicle
Keep Australia Beautiful WA operates the Litter Reporter Scheme for eligible witnessed incidents. Reports must meet the scheme requirements, so record the details promptly and submit only information you personally observed.
Dispose of Waste Lawfully
Use an authorised waste facility or collection service and secure every load before travelling. Never leave items beside a bin, at a closed facility or on a verge unless an approved service specifically permits it.
Please refer to the Waste Management section of the Shire's website for more information.
