  • Provide adequate food, water, shelter and veterinary care.

Animals in Townsites

Under the Shire's Local Law, written Shire approval is required to keep large animals such as horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, deer or camels within a townsite.

The current local law also provides that:

  • no more than 12 poultry and pigeons may be kept in total on premises within a townsite
  • written approval is required in a townsite for roosters, geese, turkeys, peafowl and gamebirds
  • Shire approval is required to keep bee hives in the district.

Animal housing must be located, cleaned and managed so it does not create odour, noise, flies, vermin, drainage or public-health problems. Contact the Shire before buying animals or constructing an enclosure.

Livestock Identification and Movement

Owners of livestock may need a Property Identification Code and approved identification, movement and recordkeeping arrangements. Check current Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development requirements for your species and activity.
