Burning Permits, Bans and Warnings

Before lighting any fire, check the seasonal burning period, the live Total Fire Ban status and any local Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban. These controls are separate and more than one may apply at the same time.

Call 000 to Report a Fire

Call 000 immediately for an unattended fire, smoke or flames that may threaten people, property or the environment. Do not delay an emergency report while checking permit details.

Published Periods for 2026-27

As per the Shire's Bushfire Management Notice  and any relevant updates since.

Restricted and Prohibited Periods

  • During a restricted burning period, obtain a permit from an authorised Fire Control Officer before burning and comply with every permit condition.
  • During a prohibited burning period, do not light a fire unless a specific lawful exemption or authorisation applies.
  • Outside these periods, fire, smoke, nuisance, environmental and safety laws still apply, and a Total Fire Ban or local ban may override normal activities.

Get a Permit to Burn

Contact a Fire Control Officer listed for the current season. Apply early enough for the site and conditions to be assessed. Keep the permit available, notify neighbours or authorities where directed and have the required people, water and equipment on site.

Check Live Bans and Warnings

  • Check Emergency WA for current warnings and incidents.
  • Check DFES for Total Fire Ban declarations and conditions, or call the Total Fire Ban hotline on 1800 709 355.
  • Call the Shire's recorded Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban line on (08) 9892 1102.
  • Call the Shire on (08) 9892 1111 to ask about subscribing to local ban notifications.

Agricultural and Machinery Activities

Do not assume an agricultural activity is automatically exempt. Check the Total Fire Ban declaration and conditions, the local Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban, the current Bushfire Management Notice and any permit requirements before operating machinery or carrying out hot work.

Road Verge Burning

A separate Shire policy and application process applies to proposed burning on a road verge. Obtain written approval before starting and follow every permit, traffic and safety condition.
