Wildlife, Snakes, Bees and Animal Welfare

Keep people and pets away from wildlife and unfamiliar animals. Do not handle a snake, disturb a hive or approach an injured animal unless a trained service advises it is safe.

Snakes

The Shire does not provide a snake-catching service. Keep a safe distance, supervise children and pets, close internal doors if practical and contact a trained remover. The Shire publishes a local wildlife, reptile and bee contact list; providers may charge a fee.

If Someone is Bitten

  1. Call 000 immediately.
  2. Keep the person still and calm.
  3. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage and immobilise the affected limb.
  4. Do not wash the bite site, cut or suck the wound, apply a tourniquet or try to catch the snake.

Follow the emergency operator’s instructions and current HealthyWA first-aid guidance.

Sick or Injured Native Wildlife

Call the DBCA Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055 for advice and referral. Wildcare provides advice; it is not a general animal collection or snake-removal service. Keep the area quiet and keep pets away while you wait for instructions.

Call 000 if an animal is creating an immediate traffic danger. For an animal on a State-controlled road, Main Roads WA can be contacted on 138 138.

Bees and Other Swarms

Keep away from a swarm or hive and do not spray, strike or block it. Use the Shire’s current contact list or a suitably qualified pest or bee service. Call 000 if a person has a severe allergic reaction or breathing difficulty.

Animal Cruelty or Neglect

Report suspected cruelty or neglect to RSPCA WA on 1300 278 358. Call 000 if there is immediate danger to a person.
