During Construction and Completing the Work

The responsible builder or demolition contractor must carry out the work in accordance with the permit, approved documents and applicable building standards. Owners should keep the approval records and communicate changes before they are built.

Before and During Work

  • confirm the permit is in effect and provide the approved documents to everyone who needs them
  • comply with planning, building, wastewater, crossover, environmental and other approval conditions
  • protect Shire assets, neighbouring property and the public
  • arrange the inspections and tests listed on the permit or compliance certificate
  • keep certificates, photographs, engineering records and product information
  • ask before making material changes to approved design, siting, structure, use or builder details

A building permit does not mean the Shire will inspect every construction stage. Responsibility for compliance remains with the responsible person, and required inspections or tests must be completed by the appropriate person.

Permit Duration and Extensions

A permit has effect for the period stated on it. If no period is stated, the default is two years from the date it was granted. If more time is needed, apply on the current BA22 form before the permit expires. An extension is not automatic.

Changing or Ceasing the Builder

If the responsible person stops before completion, a BA8 Notice of Cessation may be required. The permit is suspended until a new responsible person is approved. Use the current State guidance and contact the Shire before work continues. A request to amend a permit or builder details may use BA19, depending on the circumstances.

Notice of Completion

The responsible builder or demolition contractor must give the Shire a BA7 Notice of Completion within seven (7) days after completing the work or approved stage.

Attach every inspection or test certificate required by the permit.

A BA7 does not replace an occupancy permit for a Class 2 to 9 building and does not by itself authorise occupation.
