A multimillion-dollar park redevelopment which will deliver a destination playground and family-friendly recreational precinct in Mount Barker is one step closer, thanks to a Lotterywest grant.
Lotterywest will provide $860,021 towards the Wilson Park Youth Recreation Zone – the first stage of the Wilson Park Recreational Masterplan, endorsed by the Council in February 2024.
Shire President Len Handasyde thanked Samantha Rowe MLC for the grant, which will contribute to the construction of a new skatepark, pump track, multiuse recreational space, lighting, street furniture, path networks and upgraded carpark.
“The Shire continues to experience steady population growth, with a seven percent increase since 2019, and families in particular choosing to make Plantagenet their home,” Cr Handasyde said.
“This means infrastructure, facilities and activities for families and young people need to grow too.”
“The Youth Recreation Zone will significantly enhance the skateboarding, BMX, scooter and mountain biking opportunities in Mount Barker, with the Council allocating $1.6 million towards the first stage of the redevelopment in the 2025-2026 Annual Budget.”
“In addition, the Shire secured a Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Forward Planning Grant of $506,005 towards the Youth Recreation Zone last year.”
“We’re pleased to progress this project, with tenders invited by 5 March.”
The Council is expected to consider received tenders at the March Council meeting to award the contract.
The Wilson Park Recreational Masterplan was developed in consultation with stakeholders including Kendenup Playgroup, the Mount Barker Lions Club and the Mount Barker Mountain Bike Group, as well as the broader Plantagenet community.
